An event dedicated to October 18 - Independence Day was held at Azerbaijan University. The event was organized online in accordance with pandemic traditions.

It was noted at the event organized by the Department of Social Sciences that 30 years ago, on October 18, 1991, our people revived the traditions of statehood with the adoption of the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" by the Supreme Soviet. The Constitutional Act emphasizes that Azerbaijan is the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed from May 28, 1918 to April 28, 1920. It was noted that our people, which declared its independence twice in the twentieth century, has undergone difficult tests to preserve it. Azerbaijan achieved true independence after 30 years of intense struggle and the Great Victory over the enemy a year ago. Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and historical justice have been restored.

The speeches focused on the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the Soviet occupation and the modern era of Azerbaijan, the dangers faced by our country in the first years of independence. Information was provided on the historical services of national leader Heydar Aliyev in preventing the threat of losing independence, and the achievements of our country under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev since 2003. It was noted that the Great Victory has created new realities in the region and the world.

It was noted at the event that according to the bill adopted by the Milli Majlis in the second reading, May 28 was renamed the Republic Day and Independence Day, and October 18 was renamed the Independence Day.
